Meghan Markle Revealed She Envied Paris Hilton While Growing Up

If you grew up watching “The Simple Life”, the chances of you envying Paris Hilton in your childhood and early teens are pretty high. However, one person that we did not expect to also be a member of that club is Meghan Markle. But in a recent interview for Variety, Meghan revealed that she herself felt pretty jealous of Paris Hilton, and other popular “it girls”, while she was growing up. The late 90s and early 00s were the eras of the “Bimbo” girl, which was the topic of Meghan Markle’s podcast episode where she went more into detail about this topic.

Even though it’s hard to believe it now, Meghan opened up about her childhood and not feeling particularly beautiful at that period of her life. Instead, she relied on her mind, more than on her looks. That also caused a lot of resentment toward the “it girl” persona. Markle explained: “I grew up as the smart one. So much of what I ended up thinking about when I thought about Paris, was envy and judgment — two of the most dangerous things. But then you hear about her trauma and her life and her buying into this persona.”

But all of that would change once Meghan became more comfortable with her appearance. During her podcast episode, Meghan revealed that she felt like a Bimbo herself while she was a briefcase model at the show “Deal or No Deal”. While she was glad to have a job that was paying the bills, she felt exclusively valued for her beauty, and not her brains. She explained: “I don’t care what situation you’re in — if a 16-year-old boy or girl, or a woman in the workplace, feels objectified or dehumanized because their character is misrepresented. I hope everyone listening with an open mind could come away thinking, ‘Could I just actually consider for a second that there’s a person there?’”

The “Dumb Blonde”

During the interview, Paris Hilton opened up about her whole “dumb blonde” persona, and how pressured she felt to keep that act going. Even though deep down she knew that this persona isn’t who she truly is, she felt like it was protecting her in a way. Hilton explained:  “When you’re on TV it’s not the same – my voice, everything just changes like I have naturally a very low voice. But then on the show, it gets very high. It was a reaction to having a mask to protect myself. So it could be like they’re not talking about me, they’re talking about this character that I created. It kind of helped the pain of the media just constantly being mean and very vicious and cruel to me for so long. That character shielded me from ever really having to feel anything.”

As superficial and bubbly as Paris seemed on TV, she actually had to go through a lot of trauma at an early age. In her teen years, Hilton spent nearly a year at Provo Canyon School, where she said she was “verbally, mentally, and physically abused on a daily basis”. Paris explained: “Although Provo Canyon School marketed itself as a premier treatment center, it was as if hell itself was on Earth. I cried myself to sleep every single night, praying I would wake up from this nightmare.”
