Scarlett Johansson Says She Was “Groomed” To Be The Blonde “Bombshell”
Most of us know Scarlett Johansson from movies such as “Don Jon”, “He’s Just Not That Into You”, or “Lucy”. And in all of these roles, she portrayed the blonde bombshell. So it’s no surprise that this is the picture that comes to everyone’s mind when they hear Scarlett’s name.
However, Johansson recently told iHeartradio’s Table for Two podcast host Bruce Bozzi, that the reason why she played so many provocative roles in her career is because she was “groomed” to do so.
The blonde bombshell
During the podcast episode, the actress revealed: “I kind of became, like, an ingénue. Young girls like that are really objectified and that’s just a fact, so I think whatever box they’re put into, it sort of sets you on this trajectory for how your life will go. Now, obviously, women really are able to choose their own path.”
Johansson started her career at just 17, when she played alongside Bill Murray in Lost in Translation. During the podcast, the actress revealed that the role wasn’t an easy one for her. She explained that she has a “really hard time” filming it. However, she didn’t give any specific details. She just explained: “Our characters have this profound relationship and that was hard for me to…I struggled with that for different reasons. When I came out of it, it was like this weird fever dream.”
As she got older, Scarlett began to realize what she has gotten herself into. However, she felt like it was too late to change anything. The actress revealed. “I think because of that trajectory that I had been sort of launched towards, I really got stuck in this. I was kind of being groomed in a way to be what you call this bombshell type of actor. I was playing the other woman and this object of desire and, you know, I suddenly found myself cornered in this place. I couldn’t get out of it.”
What helped her turn around?
If you’re following Johanssons recent work, then you probably know that she did, eventually, grow out of her blonde bombshell role. The one person who helped her grow out of it is her agent Bryan Lourd. He was the one demanding that she also takes roles where her appearance wouldn’t be the main focus of the character.
Being able to portray more versatile roles also helped the actress stay relevant in the entertainment industry for such a long time. Scarlett revealed: ”It would be easy to sit across from someone in that situation and go, ‘This is working, why change it? But for that kind of bombshell, you know, that burns bright and quick and then it’s done and you don’t have opportunity beyond that.”
Today, Scarlett Johansson is much more than just a blonde bombshell Hollywood actress. She is also known for her political and philanthropic work.
But the one role that she enjoys the most is being a mom to her 8-year-old daughter and 1-year-old son. She even revealed that they inspire the roles that she now decides to play. “I think that’s an important lesson to teach girls and boys — to pursue work that is satisfying.”
