Selena Gomez Reacts To Skinny Shaming And Weight Struggles
Selena Gomez is sadly no stranger to body shaming. Her fluctuating weight has been the topic of discussion on the internet for years now. It seems like everyone has an opinion about what she should, and what she shouldn’t look like.
However, many forget that the real reason behind her occasion weight gain or weight loss is her struggle with lupus. Lupus is an autoimmune disease that comes in many different forms, and with many different symptoms. One of them is water retention and body swelling, which can be mistaken as weight gain.
Gomez has been very open about how serious her condition is, even admitting that she had to undergo a kidney transplantation. But in spite of the fact that she never kept it secret, a lot of people, even her so-called supporters, still have a lot to say about how her body looks.
The Jelena drama
Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez have been separated for almost five years now. But some of their fans are still stuck in their Jelena phase. So it’s no wonder that a lot of TikToks about these two are still circulating around the internet.
In one of those videos, a user named @donttellmymomma.fr claimed to know the reason why Selena seemed a lot slimmer while she was dating Justin. The video showed a few of her pictures from the early 2010s with “the reason why Selena is always skinny when she dates Justin” written over them.
In addition to those pictures, the user also included a screenshot of a 2014 Instagram comment where Gomez said that Justin would “rather” date “models” than her, and that she is simply “too normal”.
Needless to say, 2014 was almost 10 years ago. Selena was still in her very early twenties, and at that time she just went through her first break up with Justin. Who wouldn’t comment something slightly brassy?
Selena’s response
If you follow Selena Gomez on TikTok, you probably know that she’ll often reply to viral videos about her. This video was no exception.
While she didn’t want to go into any details, the singer and Rare Beauty owner decided to comment a sad face emoji on the TikTok.
Many of her fans were quick to jump into the comments as well, and accused the TikTok user who originally posted the video of bullying.
One of the comments said: “How can you not see that you’re hurting the one that you claim to be a fan of by still making videos like this more than half a decade later.”
Another user wrote: “Maybe she’s upset you guys are constantly bringing up her body changing over the years. She has a right to react to her OWN life. Either way she’s [fire emoji].”
Other people were upset that Selena even commented on the whole thing, with one person adding: “i feel like the fact that selena commented is sick.”
Was the comment meant sarcastically?
A lot of people also assumed that her commenting was more of an ironic joke than anything else. But considering the fact that she has spoken out about any type of body shaming before in her interviews, we think it’s safe to assume that she would appreciate it the most if people stopped commenting about her weight altogether.
